Known only by month or year

No day of death is recorded for these, so no yahrzeit day can be given.

Year known (2)

How these dates were worked out
  • Documented days. A yahrzeit day is given only where a record gives the day and month of death. People known only by month or year are in the short list below the calendar, with no day. No date is ever estimated.
  • Gravestone first. Where the gravestone gives a Hebrew date, that date is listed exactly as read on the stone. Otherwise a Hebrew date written in the record is used; otherwise the civil date is converted with a standard Hebrew-calendar algorithm.
  • Sunset. The Hebrew day begins at nightfall. When a date was converted from a civil record and the time of death is not known, the entry says which Hebrew day it would be if the death was after sunset.
  • Adar in leap years. For a death in Adar of an ordinary year, customs differ in a leap year: many keep the yahrzeit in Adar II, the Rema rules Adar I, and some keep both. The calendar shows it in Adar I (5787 is a leap year), with the Adar II date in the notes; follow your family’s custom. A death in Adar I or Adar II of a leap year is kept in that month in leap years and in Adar in ordinary years.
  • Short months. Cheshvan and Kislev sometimes have 29 days; a yahrzeit on the 30th is flagged in those years.
  • Uncertain dates are flagged — a Probable or Possible grade, a date recorded for a Holocaust victim (often a deportation or arrival date), a date from a post-war registration, or a Julian-calendar risk.
  • The observance begins the evening before the Gregorian date shown.
