Chapter One

The Seven Siblings

R’ Eliezer Zev and Miriam Perlow and the lines that meet in their children

Chomsk · Sajószentpéter · Munich · Vilna · Kobe · Shanghai · Brooklyn · Jerusalem

This book begins with seven brothers and sisters: Feigel (Cipi), R’ Aharon (R’ Ari) z”l, Hindy, Yanky, Chayie, Asher (Osher) and Shmaya — the children of R’ Eliezer Zev (Lejzer) Perlow and Miriam Perlow née Wiesner. Each chapter that follows traces one of the family lines that meet in them, generation by generation, with the records, gravestones and photographs behind every name.

R’ Eliezer Zev (Lejzer) Perlow was born in Chomsk on 27 March 1914, the son of R’ Aharon Perlow and Feigel Zditowski, daughter of R’ Eliezer Zditowski. R’ Aharon was the son of R’ Chaim Chaikel Perlow; the family memorial pages in Imrei Eliezer al HaTorah (Brooklyn 1995) give R’ Aharon’s yahrzeit as 11 Tammuz, of a year not yet known. Feigel died at Khomsk in August 1941; two of her daughters, Freida and Fruma, very probably died there the same year.

Studied at the Mir yeshiva and travelled with it through Vilna, Kobe and Shanghai; landed at San Francisco on 14 Sep 1946. Married Miriam Wiesner on 17 Nov 1948 at Gold Manor, 665 Willoughby Ave, Brooklyn; her father Rabbi Samuel (Shmaya) Wiesner officiated. Naturalized EDNY 19 Apr 1955.

His road, 1939–1946: Mir → Vilna → Kaunas (visa, 6 Aug 1940) → across Russia → Kobe (arrived 13 Feb 1941) → Shanghai → San Francisco (14 Sep 1946) → Brooklyn.

Miriam Wiesner was born at Sajószentpéter on 2 Oct 1922, the daughter of Rav Shmaya (Samuel) Wiesner and Szerén (Sarah Leah) née Szender. She and R’ Eliezer Zev were married in Brooklyn on 17 November 1948; her father officiated. She died in November 2023, Boro Park.

Her father, Rav Shmaya Wiesner (born 24 Jan 1890, Ajnácskő): Rabbi. Married Szerén Szender at Hajdúnánás on 11 Feb 1919. Wrote in the Orthodox weekly Zsidó Újság (1925, signed "Wiesner Samu, Sajószentpéter"). Came to America in 1939; his house and shul from 1941 were at 1424 49th Street, Brooklyn.
