Chapter Three

Wiesner & Reich

Gáva, Sajószentpéter and Kovácsvágás

Sátoraljaújhely · Gáva · Kovácsvágás · Ajnácskő · Sajószentpéter · Munich · New York

Miriam Wiesner Perlow was born at Sajószentpéter on 2 October 1922, the daughter of Rav Shmaya (Samuel, Samu) Wiesner (1890–1961) and Szerén (Sarah Leah) Szender. Rav Shmaya, born at Ajnácskő, wrote for the Orthodox press of the 1920s as “Wiesner Samu, Sajószentpéter”; he came to America in 1939, and from 1941 his house and shul stood at 1424 49th Street, Brooklyn.

His father Farkas (Wolf, Ze’ev) Wiesner was born at Gáva in 1865 and married Golda (Gizella) Braunfeld at Sajószentpéter in December 1887; he died there in 1922. Farkas was the son of Antal (Naftali Tzvi) Wiesner and Blüme Reich, who married in 1855; Antal ended his days in Jerusalem in 1907. Blüme was the daughter of R’ Wolf Reich, a wool merchant of Kovácsvágás, born at Nyíri on 4 April 1794, who died on 11 February 1864, and of his wife Mushkat (Muszkat), born at Nagyida on 7 September 1797, who died at Pusztafalu on 20 April 1864 — the marriage original reads “Miskat”, correcting the earlier “Mikal”, and the exact dates come from an 1857 census printed in Alei Zikaron 63 (Probable, high). Blüme’s sister Eszter married Rabbi Sámuel Krausz of Kovácsvágás.

Antal’s father was the elder Shmaya (Sámuel) Wiesner of Gáva, born about December 1802 at Sátoraljaújhely, who died at Gáva in 1862; he married at least three times. Antal’s mother Rozália, born at Csaba, was very probably a daughter of the Pri Tzadik, R’ Meir Avraham of Csaba (d. 1829) — the 1839 printing of the Pri Tzadik names “my brother-in-law R’ Shmaya” of Gáva among its subscribers. The Pri Tzadik’s wife was Frumet Pessel Benet (Probable), who died at Miskolc in 1845, daughter of R’ Gabriel Benet of Cífer and Rebeka of Nikolsburg; his own father, in his handwriting, was “R’ Yosef called Yozpa … at Cífer”.

The Pri Tzadik was buried at Hejőcsaba, near Miskolc — this is now proven: a letter of 1971, printed in “A miskolci Avas” (1993), asks that the graves of “rabbi Meir Avraham (Pri Cadik) and his wife” be moved to Miskolc separately, and a book of 1970 describes a visit to his grave there. Whether the four old stones now standing in parcel VIII of the Avas cemetery in Miskolc are his and his wife’s is possible only.

Of Rav Shmaya’s ten brothers and sisters, several died at Auschwitz in June 1944, as did their mother Golda; Ignácz, Béla, Gyula and the youngest, Antal (Naftali Tzvi), survived.

Maita Leah Wiesner Probable

Died 1916 (12 Tammuz 5676), Jerusalem

Daughter of R’ Gershon, “from Hungary”. Buried beside Antal (Naftali Tzvi) Wiesner on the Mount of Olives (Perushim chevra kadisha, block Emtza’i 2, section Gimel, row 24, grave 68) — very probably his second wife (Probable).

Mór Ónodi, born Finkelstein Probable

son of Yeta Devora (sister of the siblings' 3rd-great-grandmother Rozália) — Probable

Born c. 1864 · Died Oct 1891, Budapest

A law student in Budapest who took the surname Ónodi in 1886: the “second Ónodi”, on the same page of the name-change book as his brother Dávid and with the same new surname. He died in Budapest in October 1891, aged about 27. Probable brother of Dr Adolf Ónodi: no birth record or record naming his parents has been found.

R’ Yitzchak Yosef Blich, rav of Gáva Probable

grandson of the Pri Tzadik (his renewed stone), rav of Gáva

Born c. 1819–22 (age 54 in Mar 1876) · Died 19 Adar 5661 (10 Mar 1901), Gáva — renewed stone (Probable); another source gives 26 Adar 5658 (20 Mar 1898)

Conflict kept visible: the printed biography in HebrewBooks 51233 calls him a son-in-law of the Pri Tzadik, but earlier research (Alei Zikaron 66 and his stone) makes him a grandson — and a man who died in 1898 is far more likely a grandson of someone who died in 1829. The 1839 book itself names Shmaya of Gáva, not Blich, as the publisher’s brother-in-law there. Son-in-law: Possible. Read the full record →

Eszti (Esther) Blich, written “Fridmán Eszti” Probable

mother of R’ Yitzchak Yosef Blich; daughter of the Pri Tzadik and sister of Rozália (Probable; the siblings' 4th-great-grandaunt)

Mother of R’ Yitzchak Yosef (József) Blich, rav of Gáva: Proven as his mother, from the Balsa/Gáva marriage register, 24 Mar 1876, entry 27, which names the groom’s parents “Blich Náthán, Rabiner, Csabán” and “Fridmán Eszti” (image 305, read on the original). As a daughter of the Pri Tzadik she is Probable: Alei Zikaron names the rav of Gáva’s mother as Esther, daughter of the Pri Tzadik; his renewed stone calls him the Pri Tzadik’s grandson; and her husband was rabbi at Csaba, the Pri Tzadik’s town. Maiden-name conflict kept visible: the register writes her maiden name “Fridmán”, while the Pri Tzadik’s family appears as Benet in Yeta Devora’s records and as Roth or Benet for Rozália (her son’s own records elsewhere give “Friedman” and “Rosenbaum”). Son-in-law of the Pri Tzadik. Listed under Kótaj in the 1839 book (p. 95) as the publisher’s “brother-in-law R’ Pinchas David”; the printed biography names him as rav of Bököny, who settled in Jerusalem and died there.

sister of Rozália

Born c.1820/26, Csaba · Died 24 Jan 1908, Budapest

husband of Yeta Devora (sister of the siblings' 3rd-great-grandmother Rozália)

Died before May 1887

Husband of Yeta Devora née Benet, of Miskolc; a private gentleman (“magánzó”). Three registers name him as Dr Adolf Ónodi’s father: the 1857 Miskolc birth (“Jos. His burial at Hejőcsaba is Proven: a letter of 19 July 1971 printed in “A miskolci Avas” (1993, p.388) asks that the graves of “rabbi Meir Avraham (Pri Cadik) and his wife” not be exhumed with the rest but moved to Miskolc separately, and Paszternák (1970, p.62) describes a visit to his grave there.
