Chapter Five

Szender, Engel & Fried

Hajdúdorog and Hajdúnánás

Mád · Újfehértó · Makó · Nagykároly · Hajdúdorog · Hajdúnánás

Szerén (Sarah Leah) Szender, wife of Rav Shmaya Wiesner, was born at Hajdúnánás on 29 April 1894, the daughter of Herman (Tzvi Aryeh) Szender, a merchant, and Jetti (Etel) Glück. Herman and Jetti were married at Nyírbátor on 21 March 1893; the original register entry names both sets of parents. Her sister Margit was born at Hajdúnánás in 1914.

Herman was born at Hajdúdorog in 1869, the son of Mendel (Menachem, Emánuel) Szender (c.1825–1913) and Kati Engel. Mendel’s parents were Lajos (Leib) Szender — R’ Tzvi Aryeh of Dorog, now Probable (high) from three sources — and Róza Klein — Mendel’s 1913 civil death entry names both as his parents, and his wife as Engel Katalin (Proven). Whether Róza is the “Szender Róza, 84, born at Mád” who died at Újfehértó in 1876 is only Possible and is kept separate.

Kati Engel was the daughter of Jakab (Yaakov Koppel) Engel, innkeeper of Hajdúdorog, born at Makó about 1812, and Klára Fried, born at Nagykároly about 1818. A new generation: Alei Zikaron 64 (2023) names Koppel’s parents as R’ Yoshe (Yehoshua) Engel and Gitel (Probable) — the same note gives dates for Mendel and Kati that match the civil records exactly. It replaces an earlier guess, Gábor Engel and Borbála Ignatz of Makó, now demoted.

Mendel’s brother R’ Dávid Szender, a shochet of Hajdúdorog who died in Jerusalem in 1897, had a son Sámuel, born at Szentmihály in 1861. A Shmuel son of David Szender, aged 71, was buried at Košice in 1932, and his stone there was restored in 2026 (Probable that they are the same man). Herman himself also made straw hats: a 1912 statistical yearbook lists his straw-hat works at Hajdúnánás, founded 1907, with 25 employees.
