Chapter Two
Perlow & Zditowski
Chomsk, in today’s Belarus
Chomsk · Telekhany · Mir · Vilna · Kobe · Shanghai · Brooklyn
R’ Eliezer Zev (Lejzer) Perlow was born in Chomsk on 27 March 1914, the son of R’ Aharon Perlow and Feigel Zditowski, daughter of R’ Eliezer Zditowski. R’ Aharon was the son of R’ Chaim Chaikel Perlow; the family memorial pages in Imrei Eliezer al HaTorah (Brooklyn 1995) give R’ Aharon’s yahrzeit as 11 Tammuz, of a year not yet known. Feigel died at Khomsk in August 1941; two of her daughters, Freida and Fruma, very probably died there the same year.

R’ Chaim Chaikel had at least four children: R’ Aharon; R’ Asher, the blacksmith of Chomsk; Jacob Perlow of Telekhany (1884–1958), proven to be R’ Eliezer’s uncle by the 1941 Mir yeshiva list; and very probably Esther Dollinger of Brooklyn (1897–1945). Jacob lies in the plot of the Telechaner Swentiwolier society at Montefiore Cemetery, which ties the family to Telekhany, near Chomsk. In 1982 R’ Eliezer wrote that his father was “of the family of the Stolin Rebbe” (proven as printed). On Feigel’s side, the Zditowski clan of Khomsk can now be followed back to Leyzor son of Itsko, in the revision lists of 1806 and 1811 (probable).
How the family is related to Reb Aharon HaGadol of Karlin. By family tradition, R’ Chaim Chaikel is R’ Chaim, born in Stolin in 1852, son of R’ Aharon Perlov of Stolin (b. 1826); on the records this is possible only. R’ Aharon of Stolin was the son of R’ Chaim Chaikel of Haradnaja near Stolin (1807–52; probable on the 1850/1858 revision index rows; the journal itself raises the possibility that he was Bluma’s son by her first marriage, Kovetz 214 p. קנט n. 89 — in that case there would be no descent from Reb Aharon HaGadol), whose father R’ Moshe Dov Ber (1779–1847, buried in Tiberias) was the STEPSON of the Stolin Rebbe R’ Asher — that is how the Perlov name came into this line (proven as printed). The possible blood tie would run through R’ Chaim Chaikel of Haradnaja’s mother Beyla, a daughter of R’ Moshe of Kobrin, Reb Aharon HaGadol’s brother (probable). His first wife Devorah was Reb Aharon HaGadol’s granddaughter, through his daughter Rivka; if she was the mother of R’ Aharon (b. 1826), the family would also descend from Reb Aharon HaGadol directly (possible). This site does not identify our family with the separate Koidanov Perlovs. The source is a Stolin–Karlin journal, Kovetz Beit Aharon veYisrael no. 214 (2021), which prints the Stolin censuses and a 19th-century handwritten family tree by R’ Shmuel Heller of Safed. This whole Stolin–Karlin–Kobrin block — generations 5 to 9 counting the seven siblings as the first (R’ Aharon Perlov of Stolin, R’ Chaim Chaikel of Haradnaja, R’ Moshe Ber and Beyla, R’ Aharon of Zelichov, Feiga, R’ Moshe of Kobrin, R’ Yaakov of Kobrin and their wives) — is family tradition, not documented: it attaches to our family only through the link of R’ Chaim Chaikel Perlow to R’ Aharon Perlov of Stolin, which rests on family tradition (October 2026) and the 1982 phrase “of the family of the Stolin Rebbe”; no record follows R’ Chaim b. 1852 after 1874. Generations above that link are not counted as documented.
R’ Eliezer learned at the Mir yeshiva and went with it into exile — Vilna, then Kobe (his name is on the Sugihara visa list of 6 August 1940, line 1231) and Shanghai — and landed at San Francisco on 14 September 1946. His elder brother HaRav Chaim Chaikel Perlov (1911–1996) also reached America. Their uncle Asher Perlow, the blacksmith of Chomsk, and his household died at Khomsk in 1941.
In Brooklyn on 17 November 1948 R’ Eliezer married Miriam Wiesner at Gold Manor, 665 Willoughby Avenue; her father Rabbi Samuel (Shmaya) Wiesner officiated. He was naturalized in 1955 and died on 16 Tammuz 5766 (12 July 2006). They had seven children: Feigel (Cipi), R’ Aharon (R’ Ari) z”l, Hindy, Yanky, Chayie, Osher and Shmaya.

Born 5586 (1826) · Died before 1874
Son of R’ Chaim Chaikel of Haradnaja (probable: in his father’s household in the 1850 Stolin census). Conflict: the journal also raises the possibility that he was the son of R’ Chaim Chaikel’s wife Bluma by her first marriage, and not his son (Kovetz Beit Aharon veYisrael 214, p. קנט and note 89); if so, there would be no descent from Reb Aharon HaGadol through him. The 1850 and 1858 index rows call him Khaykel’s son, but their images have not been read. Read the full record →
