Chapter Six

Glück, Rózmann, Ornstein & Fisch

Nyírbátor, Kemecse, Bököny, Pápa and Kalló

Pápa · Bököny · Kemecse · Nyírbátor · Pátroha · Nagykálló · Ungvár

Jetti Glück was born at Nyírbátor on 10 May 1873, the daughter of Sámuel Glück, iron merchant of Nyírbátor (d. 1896), and Betti (Borbála) Rózmann of Pátroha. A gravestone at Nyírbátor of “Frumet, wife of R’ Shmuel Glick”, who died on 24 June 1926 aged 70, is very probably Betti’s — her Hebrew name was Frumet, daughter of R’ Shimon Tzvi Rózmann of Pátroha. Betti’s parents were Samuel (R’ Shimon Hersh) Rosman, landowner of Pátroha, and very probably Sára Leah of Horlyó.

Sámuel’s father was Rabbi Menyhért (R’ Menachem Mendel) Glück of Kemecse (1815–1905), whose stone calls him “son of R’ Gedalya of Bököny”; he founded the Kemecse yeshiva about 1879. Sámuel’s mother was Adel Golda (Leutscha) Edeles — proven by the 1848 census of Szobránc, and by an 1880 signature “Shmuel ben Adel Golda” — not the “Chana” of earlier accounts. Her parents were very probably R’ Moshe Yehuda Leib Edeles of Véke and Chana (Hani) Grünwald (Probable); above them R’ Zeev Wolf of Véke is a possible link. R’ Gedalya (Dániel) Glück was born at Pápa on 15 February 1796 and died at Bököny on 13 November 1881; he wrote Chayei Olam, printed in 1899. His original gravestone at Bököny was found during this research, and he appears in contemporary documents — the Chatam Sofer calls him “my diligent student R’ Gedalya”, and in 1864 he sat as a judge of the Kalló court.

R’ Gedalya’s parents were, very probably, R’ Chanoch (Henoch) Glück of Pápa — listed there in 1828 as “Jud. Gluk Enoch” — and Liba; a probable brother, Elias Glück, was a merchant at Ungvár and died there in 1874. By family tradition (Possible only) the family came from Prague under the name Gad.

R’ Gedalya’s wife Eszti (Esther) Ornstein (d. 1864) was the daughter of R’ Avraham Ornstein of Bököny and a daughter of R’ Yaakov Fisch, Judenrichter of Kalló, who signed in 1797 as “Yaakov Fisch ben R’ Yitzchak” and died on Simchat Torah 1843. His own stone in the Fisch ohel at Nagykálló reads “son of R’ Yitzchak”.
